Mission 1 · Understand

What is Versa really, and is it safe?

Understand Versa in 5 minutes. Not a bank, not a trading app. Who manages your money, who holds the assets, why there's no PIDM, and when Versa isn't for you.

5 min read Checked 16 Sep 2026 Has video

Quick answer

  • Versa is not a bank and not a trading app. Your money buys units in a fund managed by AHAM.
  • Assets are held by an independent trustee (HSBC, Deutsche, CIMB), separate from Versa's own company money.
  • No PIDM because this is an investment. Returns aren't guaranteed, but if Versa shuts down, your units are still there.

What you need

Versa in one paragraph

Versa is an app. When you “cash in”, the money doesn’t sit in a Versa account the way money sits in a bank. Your money directly buys units in a fund managed by AHAM Asset Management Berhad, the fund manager that runs AHAM assets under management: more than RM60 billionChecked 16 Sep 2026 · Source: versa.com.my/about-us ↗. Those units are then held by an independent TrusteeAn independent party (HSBC, Deutsche, CIMB) that holds the fund's assets, not Versa itself.Glossary · Read more →, not by Versa. You earn when the unit price rises, or for some funds, when the fund distributes payouts as extra units.

Simply put, Versa is the doorway. AHAM is the cook. The trustee is the safe that keeps the goods. You hold the receipt (units) that show how much is yours.

Three parts in the app

  1. Save (Versa Cash, Versa Cash-i). Money market funds, low risk, minimum RM10. Many people use this as a place to park emergency cash. Base nett return June 2026: Cash Versa Cash base nett return: 3.46% p.a.For August 2026. 2. Invest (21 funds). Gold, bonds, REITs, Malaysian stocks, Asia, Japan, India, China, US and global tech. Prices move up and down, and you can lose money.
  3. Retirement (6 PRS funds). For retirement, with tax relief up to RM3,000 a year. Money is locked until age 55 except under certain conditions.

There’s no buying and selling individual stocks, no candlestick charts, no “buy in the morning, sell in the evening”. If you’re looking for a trading app, Versa isn’t it.

Is it safe? Look at who controls what

The question Daus gets most is “is Versa a scam?”. The answer depends on three things you can check yourself.

Who regulates it. Versa is regulated by Versa's regulator: Securities Commission Malaysia (recognised market operator, SC-GL/6-2015(R5-2020))Checked 16 Sep 2026 · Source: Versa Help Centre #12622507204759 ↗. This is an official status, not just “registered with SSM”.

Who holds the assets. Who holds the assets: independent trustees: HSBC (Save), Deutsche (Cash-i), CIMB Commerce (Invest)Checked 16 Sep 2026 · Source: Versa Help Centre #12622553562391 ↗. This means investor money is kept separate from Versa’s own company money.

What happens if Versa goes bankrupt. Because the assets sit with the trustee under AHAM, your units don’t disappear if Versa closes down. Versa itself uses the analogy of a fireproof safe in a house: even if the house burns, what’s in the safe stays safe.

Daus made a whole video about this exact question because he himself keeps tens of thousands in Versa and once wondered the same thing.

Why no PIDM?

PIDM protects bank deposits up to RM250,000. Versa isn’t a bank, and your money isn’t a deposit. You’re buying fund units, so you’re an investor, not a depositor. That’s why PIDM protection: none, because this is an investment, not a bank depositChecked 16 Sep 2026 · Source: versa.com.my/is-versa-pidm-protected-how-your-funds-are-secured ↗.

Does that mean it’s riskier? The risk is just different. In a bank, the main risk is the bank failing, which is why PIDM exists. In a fund, the main risk is the unit value dropping. For money market funds like Cash and Cash-i, the swings are usually small. For Invest funds, the swings can be big.

Does Versa have agents? No.

Versa agents: Versa has no agents or advisorsChecked 16 Sep 2026 · Source: Versa Help Centre #12622598105239 ↗. If someone WhatsApps you claiming to be a “Versa agent”, asking for your OTP, telling you to transfer to another account, or sending you an APK file, that’s a scam. Only download the app from the official App Store, Play Store or Huawei AppGallery.

Daus isn’t a Versa agent either. Daus is a user who makes tutorials, and earns a referral commission when you sign up with his code. Full explanation is on the About page.

When Versa isn’t for you

Versa is good for some people, not everyone. Versa may not suit you if:

  • You need the money in less than 3 days and can’t work around the cut-off. Cash-i can reach your bank the same day, but only if you request before 10am on a business day.
  • You want PIDM protection or a guaranteed fixed rate.
  • You want to pick and trade individual stocks.
  • You are a PR or foreign national. Versa is only for Malaysian citizens with a MyKad.

Full list is in when Versa is not for you.

How does Versa make money?

Versa and AHAM charge management and trustee fees baked into the unit price. You don’t see a separate bill; the app shows the net return after fees. Example: Versa Cash-i Versa Cash-i fees: management 0.50%, trustee 0.02% a yearChecked 17 Sep 2026 · Source: Daus (Versa app, Product Information, 17 Sep 2026) ↗.
