When Versa isn't right for you
Daus has used Versa for years, but Versa isn't for everyone. Six situations where somewhere else fits better, and what alternatives you should look at instead.
Quick answer
- Versa has no PIDM protection and returns aren't guaranteed. If that's a must-have, a bank FD fits better.
- Money you need instantly, at any time fits better in a regular bank account.
- Only for Malaysian citizens with a MyKad. PRs and foreigners can't use it.
What you need
- None
Why Daus wrote this page
Daus earns a commission when you sign up with his code. But Daus would rather you not sign up at all than sign up, feel misled, and pull all your money out next month. So here’s an honest list of when Versa isn’t the right fit.
1. You need PIDM protection
Versa isn’t a bank. PIDM protection: none, because this is an investment, not a bank deposit. Your money is protected in other ways (an independent trustee, assets kept separate from the company), but if you want official deposit protection up to RM250,000, a savings account or bank FD is the right choice.
2. You want a guaranteed fixed rate
Save’s base net return changes every month. June 2026: Cash Versa Cash base nett return: 3.46% p.a.For August 2026. , Cash-i Versa Cash-i base nett return: 3.18% p.a.For August 2026. . Next month it could go up, or down. Even a “4.2% fixed” promo is a quest with conditions, not a guaranteed rate on all your money. If you want to know exactly what you’ll get by year end, an FD fits better.
3. You need money instantly, at any time
Cash-i is the fastest: same day, but only if you request before 10am on a business day. Request Friday at 11am, the money arrives Monday. Cash takes T+1, Invest funds take up to T+6. For daily spending money or an emergency that needs cash within the hour, keep some in a regular bank account.
4. You want to pick and trade individual stocks yourself
Versa doesn’t offer buying and selling individual stocks. Every product is a fund managed by AHAM. If you want to buy Maybank or Apple shares yourself, you need a stockbroking platform.
5. You’re a PR or a foreigner
Who can open an account: Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above with a MyKad. Malaysians working abroad can use it, with a TIN, a Malaysian phone number, and the app downloaded from within Malaysia.
6. You can’t stomach seeing value drop, but want to go into Invest funds
This isn’t a reason to avoid Versa entirely, but a reason to stay in Save. Invest funds like Gold, REITs and India are labelled very high risk. If a 20% drop would keep you up at night, start with Save first.
